Nigeria: Senator Tasks Yar'Adua on High Standards in Appointments

3 November 2008

Senate Defense and Army Committee Chairman, Ibrahim Ida, has urged President Umaru Yar'Adua to insist on high professional and moral standards while appointing political office holders.

Ida told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that last week's cabinet shake-up by Yar'Adua was a right step in the right direction.

"I commend the president for taking such a bold step after a thorough evaluation of his cabinet for more than one year," he said.

Ida expressed the hope that Yar'Adua would also be thorough in appointing ministers who would replace the dropped ones.

"I have no doubt that he will be very thorough in doing that because I have always known him as someone who takes time to plan his moves," he added.

The senator vouched for Yar'Adua's competence in promoting excellent governance, saying: "With Yar'Adua, there are no sacred cows because he has always been a disciplined leader."
