Kampala — THE Inter-party Co-operation, an alliance of four opposition political parties, has agreed to field a joint candidate in the Kyadondo North parliamentary by-election.
Addressing journalists in Kampala yesterday, the alliance spokesperson, who doubles as the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) spokesperson, Wafula Oguttu, said the joint candidate was Grace Nakabuye. She will be accompanied by the party presidents of the four opposition parties at her nomination.
Nominations for the seat are on today and the election will take place on December 4.
The seat fell vacant following the death of Israel Kibirige Sebunnya, the former agriculture minister.
In a meeting held on Sunday at Munyonyo, the leaders of Conservative Party, Uganda People's Congress, Justice Forum and FDC agreed that they would field one candidate.
Nakabuye becomes the first joint candidate for the inter-party co-operation since it was launched early August. One of the four cardinal objectives for the cooperation is to create a joint electoral platform.
Although the Democratic Party (DP) opted out of the co-operation, Oguttu said they would talk to DP to consider fielding one opposition candidate. DP is fielding its own candidate, Regina Bakitte.
The ruling National Resistance MOvement party is yet to announce its candidate, but Eng. Robert Kibirige, the late Sebunya's son, is expected to be the party's flagbearer.
