Five people died in a horrific road accident late Friday afternoon when a Hyundai station wagon collided with a bus along the Gaborone-Kanye highway near Ramaphatle.
The accident brought traffic to a stand still on the highway.
Thamaga police station commander, Superintendent Morris Kwena said that five people died and about 16 are in critical condition.
At the time of the interview, Kwena said police officers had gone to Princess Marina Hospital to check on the condition of the people who were injured. He said they are still investigating what caused the accident.
One of the people who arrived at the scene just after the accident said it was a terrible sight. He said three people were trapped under the overturned bus. He said it seemed the bus had a tyre burst and went out of control, ramming into the Hyundai. He said there were five people in the Hyundai including the driver. He said the driver of the Hyundai and three occupants of the car died on the spot.
He said at the time when he arrived on the scene, the police and the medical staff from Thamaga hospital, were attending to the accident. The car was heading to Thamaga while the bus was going to Gaborone.
Meanwhile, a man was knocked to death by a vehicle in Jwaneng. It is said he was coming from a festival of South Africa music group, Splash early on Saturday morning. However, there has been no official confirmation from the police.
Splash shows have been marred by tragedies. A few years ago, a reveller was stabbed to death at a Splash festival in Selebi-Phikwe. Another was mauled by lions at the Lions Park when he tried to sneak into a Splash festival. Last year, a football personality died in a road accident after attending a Splash festival in Molepolole.
