Uganda: Cheeye Faces Suspension

Kampala — The embattled Director of Economic Affairs in the Internal Security Organisation (Iso), Mr Teddy Ssezi Cheeye, who is currently on charges of embezzling Shs120 m from the Global Fund to fight HIV/Aids and Malaria, now faces suspension from his organisation.

The Iso Director, Dr Amos Mukumbi, told Daily Monitor on Friday, shortly after Mr Cheeye was released on bail, that the security agency has no alternative but to interdict him until the case is disposed of.

"We have not done it but we have no option but to suspend him until the charges against him, which we believe are serious, are done with," Dr Mukumbi said. "Though we can't expel him because he is still a suspect and still presumed innocent, the outcome of the case will guide us on the next action."

In one of the 26 charges he is facing, the state alleges that Mr Cheeye, as director in a Company known as Uganda Centre for accountability, embezzled Shs120 million during the period from March to December 2005.

The said company was charged with monitoring, evaluating and supervising Global Fund implementers in Rakai, Kabale, Ntungamo and Mbarara districts.

When contacted for a comment, Mr Cheeye said, "I don't know. I don't want to comment on anything."

Through his lawyer, Mr Andrew Lumonya, Mr Cheeye successfully secured bail on which presiding Judge Benjamin Kabiito attached seven conditions on ground of advanced age.

He was ordered by court to deposit his passport to the Registrar.
