Uganda: Kireka Thump Aviation

Kampala — Kireka underlined their title ambitions by thumping Aviation 5-0 on Sunday to extend their lead in the National Chess League.

Team captain Emma Mwaka kick started the demolition with a 5-0 win over Aviation's Stephen Kisuze before his Kireka counterpart Micheal Mawanda walloped Alex Ruzigura by an identical score.

Youngster Kenneth Ouma outclassed Raphael Buti 4-1 to put Kireka in a commanding lead that proved too big a task for Aviation.

Olympiad-bound Vianney Lugya gave some hope to Aviation but fell short 3-2 at the hands of Walter Okas.

Fiona Tumubone then completed Kireka's demolition job, handing Prossy Ngoby a 4-1 beating in the ladies' category. Considering the level of play, Lugya was Aviation's best player though he failed to win.

The victory put Kireka on 34 points, six ahead of Makerere University, who continued their push for the title with a 4.5-0.5 victory over Mulago Knights.

Makerere stars Harold Wanyama, Frobisha Katula, Fred Okiring and Clare Amoko defeated Mulago's Simon Gonza, Mike Akabu, Caxton Kalule and Robinah Namwanje.

It was only Arthur Segwanyi, who secured a draw for Mulago against Makerere's Derrick Twesigye. The performance leaves Mulago at the bottom of the seven-team table with 10.5 points.
