Kenya: Prayers Offered for Obama in Kogelo

staff blog

Kogelo — AllAfrica's Katy Gabel blogs from the home of Senator Barack Obama's family in Kogelo, western Kenya.

3.30 pm East Africa Time (8 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time, U.S.): A prayer service for Barack Obama is now underway in Kogelo. Prayers have been offered for Obama's maternal grandmother, Madelyn Payne Dunham, who died of cancer on Monday.

Dunham is often referred to here as "our grandmother" and at a press briefing from the Obama homestead, Malik Abango, Obama's half-brother, described her as "close" family.

Washington Ogonyo Ngede, bishop of the Power of Jesus Around the World church, claims Obama's success so far is a direct result of his prayers during Obama's 2006 visit to Kenya.

According to organizers, the service could "go on all night."

Thank you to all the great and wonderful people of Kenya. Your blessing brought about a change never before seen in the history of our country, the United States of America. I am sure you carry the joy of knowing the truth of America as the land of freedom exists in everyone here and that your knowledge of that truth gives you the strength to carry you and your country to the same situation. Again, thank you and God Bless... Robert

After-the-fact exposure: Choice of the mainstream media By Special K Disassociated Press November 22, 2008

Barack Obama's extended family gains celebrity status in Kenya. But some of the attention, especially commentary on their economic situation, is a little unwelcome and is causing familial tensions.

By Edmund Sanders November 22, 2008

Reporting from Nyangoma-Kogelo, Kenya -- For about 400 people in western Kenya who can call the next U.S. president "part of the family," the business of being an Obama has a whole new meaning.

The modest family compound here has been inundated by hordes of visitors, varying from reporters and local politicians to ordinary Kenyans

looking for help in getting U.S. visas, scholarships, jobs or cash. Family matriarch Sarah Onyango, step-grandmother of President-elect Barack Obama, is treated like a rock star wherever she goes. ****

Now . . . mirable dictu, one of the mainstreamers deigns to report On Barack’s extended family, living in Kenya (primarily)-- About which during the campaign we heard not one mainstream peep.

By design, to keep it under wraps? By inference, yea, verily. Why? Quien sabe? The family was rampant on Google, But there was no media reference to half-brother, George, for example, Although of his impoverished plight (thanks to press coverage abroad) Google daily supplied--in the form of up to 3.7 million items--evidence ample.

And except for his favorite aunt (Zeituni Onyango) [1]-- An illegal immigrant to the USA-- About Obama’s extended family (otherwise living in Kenya) It appears that the AP had next to nothing, pre-election, to say.

Now that Obama’s been elected, It seems that our indigenous press corps May be sending more representatives to Kenya Than have ever been seen there before.

What purpose is now being served By focusing attention of Obama’s extended family? Again, who knows? Quien sabe What prompts now press action after such profound pre-election lethargy?

Perhaps it’s as simple as the realization That when a press corps votes predominately “Democratic”, The likelihood it will investigate their candidate’s background is approaches nil-- A logical proposition; and one that’s virtually automatic.

And it is a logical corollary of the foregoing That such a corps will inundate the atmosphere With reports potentially un-flattering to the opposition-- Which mainstream media addicts will tend mainly to hear.[2]

Still this does not quite explain What prompts attention after a campaign To facts about a candidate's background When there’s nothing (apparent) from it to gain.

And when the facts have to do with family connections Suppression would seem to suggest that the press Viewed them as somehow unfavorable to its candidate News of which it then (successfully) contrived to suppress.

Of course, we may never know precisely, for example, Why there was so little coverage of erstwhile terrorist, William Ayers, And none at all in our press of Bishop Ngede Who said Barack’s success was due to his "bishoprical" prayers.[3]

    Ed. note: November 23, 2008 Thus far, Obama has not openly acknowledged knowing Bishop Ngede, But (privately) is said to have expressed appreciation for his clearly instrumental prayers; Also that he'd welcome the Bishop's support (prayerful or otherwise) In extracting public repentance from his friend, William Ayers;

And in support of his ambitious plan (recently proposed) To create some 2.5 million jobs in an economy that's slumping-- Obama also acknowledged that a prayer or two might also help the Big Three Who into the haven of bankruptcy, soon, may be jumping. ------------------------------------- [1] (From Google homepage--not viewed in any print medium) Sunday, November 02, 2008

Feds investigating leak about Obama's aunt By EILEEN SULLIVAN – 50 minutes ago WASHINGTON (AP) — The government is investigating whether any laws were broken involving details about the disclosure that Barack Obama's aunt was living in the country illegally.

The Associated Press learned late Friday learned that Obama's half aunt, who is from Kenya, was ordered to leave the United States years ago after an immigration judge denied her request for asylum.

The woman, Zeituni Onyango (zay-TUHN on-YANG-oh), is living in public housing in Boston http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5iVVj5SjAgqpjIbqdmcOB74FtqRIAD946VNCG0

Of course, it could be that such results Reflect not so much one-sided exposure As differential retention--e.g., suppression of negative attributes of the favored candidate-- After full and unbiased disclosure.

A test of speculation such as the foregoing Could be conducted by administering the same exam via interview To a sample of regular listeners to talk radio (Rush or Sean, for example)-- Results indicating equal knowledge across candidates would lend support to the “mainstream bias” view.
