Ghana: Ketu-North Schools Grateful to Gov't

Dzodze — The Headmaster of the Dzodze- Penyi Senior High School, Mr. S. K. Senaye, has commended government efforts at promoting education in the Ketu-North District, through the provision of modern educational infrastructure, which would enhance effective teaching and learning.

Mr. Senaye noted that over the years, both teachers and students went through difficult situations as a result of inadequate infrastructure, adding that the Parent Teachers Association (PTA), started a twelve-unit storey-building project, but it could not be completed due to financial difficulties.

The Headmaster said this when the Volta Regional Minister, Mr. Samuel Kofi Dzamesi, inaugurated multi-million cedi facilities for basic and second cycle institutions in the District. They were financed from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund).

The multi-million cedi projects included a twelve unit storey-building classroom with store and office for the Wovenu Senior High Technical School at Tadzewu. A six unit classroom block for the Heheme Basic School; a twelve-unit classroom block, with an office and place of convenience for the Kave Basic Schools, and a multi-purpose assembly hall complex for the Dzodze-Penyi Senior High School.

The Minister also inspected progress of work on the Secondary Technical project at Weta. Mr. Senaye commended Mr. Dzamesi, whom he described as a visionary leader, who tackled issues in consultation with stakeholders, noting that through the effort of the Minister, the Dzodze- Penyi Senior High School started benefiting from the GETFund, which most of the students, parents and teachers thought would never support them.

According to him, until the current government took over the administration of the country, they had never benefited from such facilities.

The Headmaster of the school, however, appealed to the government to provide the school with a bus, as the only vehicle breaks down frequently, which made it difficult for the school administration to organise educational tours, as well as provide the school with teachers' bungalows.

The Headmaster of the Woven Senior High Technical School, Togbi Agbeve Ayirim II, also thanked the government and Mr. Dzamesi for the provision of the 12-unit storey classroom block, which would go a long way to address the problem of inadequate classrooms facing the school, and urged the minister, government, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and individuals, to help furnish the new classrooms with modern furniture.

Togbi Agbeve Ayirim said another serious problem confronting the school, was the lack of hostel facilities for students, a situation he pointed out was affecting discipline among the students, as they were housed in rented houses in the town, without any form of supervision. The Regional Minister, who received cheers from the students at Tadzewu and Dzodze-Penyi, told the over thousand students that it was unfortunate that the GETFund, which was established during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regime, was not used to support the school, leading to its present state.

Mr. Dzamesi assured the school authorities that teachers' bungalows would be provided for the school, as well as a bus.

According to him, the government had recognised that education was the only way to accelerate development of the country, hence efforts would be made to create a sound school environment, to ensure effective teaching and learning in schools.

Mr. Dzamesi pointed out to the students and pupils in the area, that numerous structures being built in both the basic and second cycle institutions, were to strengthen existing facilities, adding that the new structures ought to be seen as the greatest challenge to the students and pupils to learn hard, and contribute meaningfully towards the development of the country in future.
