Uganda: KCC, Express Win, URA Host Simba

Kampala — Robert Ssentongo's brilliant finishing put Bugerere to the sword to maintain KCC's grip on second in the Super League yesterday.

Brian Omwony set the tone for KCC's victory inside the opening six minutes when he beat the offside trap to score easily. But it was Ssentongo's 15th minute strike - a superb low shot with his left foot into the net - that effectively ended Bugerere's improbable task.

Edirisa Makoona made the most of KCC skipper Sam Mubiru's sluggish defending to pull one back for the lowly side but Ssentongo made sure of maximum points with his second, and the champions' third mid-way through the second half.

The win pushed KCC to 30 points, one short of leaders Simba who play third-placed URA at Namboole stadium today. At Bugembe stadium in Jinja, Express secured victory over bottom-placed Kakira thanks to a Julius Ogwang goal in the first half.

Meanwhile Simba coach Sam Ssimbwa and his URA counter part Moses Basena have traded barbs ahead of their showdown, URA has been the league's dominant team in the last couple of years, KCC's 2008 title notwithstanding, but Ssimbwa is convinced Basena's team will be underdogs at Namboole today. Simba is top of the table with 31 points while URA is third with 24.

"They (URA) are coming in the game as underdogs because even if they win, they will not remove us from the top. And I do not think I will even give them chance to beat me," said Ssimbwa.

Ssimbwa has promised to use the variations in his 4-4-2 system that have delivered impressed results for the army side. "I will obviously approach them with a 4-4-2 format but they should be aware that it is not the ordinary 4-4-2 they know. This one has variations," he warned. However Basena has advised his counterpart to practice what he preaches.

"Football is not played on the mouth. It is a game played on the pitch; let's wait to see what Simba will deliver on the pitch," Basena, a former Simba coach, hit back.

In the other matches, Maji host SC Villa while Bunnamwaya, for whom Caesar Okhuti has become an instant hit, should find few problems against Sharing at Nakivubo.Police travel to Buikwe.
