Uganda: Teacher Held Over Phone Theft

Kampala — DRAMA ensued at the Mityana magistrate's court when a suspected notorious conman was charged with seven counts of theft.

Ronald Ssembuusi, a teacher from Luweero district, appeared before Grade Two magistrate Godfrey Luwagga, on charges of theft of mobile phones and money.

Luwagga read the first charge of stealing a Nokia mobile phone worth sh600,000 but before he could finish reading, Ssembuusi raised his hand. He admitted to having heard the counts read to him but appealed that no more counts should be read to him, as he was very sick.

"Your worship, I am sick, suffering from AIDS. I also have sores and pus in my private parts. I ask you to let me be admitted to the government hospital because I cannot stay in prison any more," Ssembuusi pleaded.

Luwagga, however, rejected his plea and said there were doctors to care for him. "Do not mind. In prison, you will receive medication. If your situation gets worse, then the officers will take necessary procedures," Luwagga said.

He continued to read other charges that included theft of clothes, mattresses, money and more mobile phones.
