Uganda: Mandy Book Reveals His Growth Secrets

Kampala — An autobiography detailing the life of the former commissioner for the inspectorate in the education ministry, Fagil Mandy, is to be launched next month.

Mandy, now a private educational consultant, authored the 250-page book, Self Engineering: My success Story.

"This is my success story from then to present," Mandy told the press at the National Theatre recently. "It contains secrets that influenced my professional, social and spiritual growth."

The book targets people of all ages. "I want them to learn about the important lessons I have gone through in life to achieve success. I am sure my lessons will nurture those who have not been able to go through similar experiences," he said.

The book, which has taken Mandy one-and-a-half years to write, will be launched on November 11, at the National Theatre auditorium."I chose this day because it coincides with my birthday. This is when my success story began," he said. Each copy of the book will go for sh25,000 and 1,000 copies will be available.

Mandy joined the civil service as a 22-year-old-Grade Five teacher in1972. He served as resident district commissioner(RDC) for a few years where he was involved in political science programmes like Mchakamchaka in the 1990s, before he was posted to the Ministry of Education and Sports as the commissioner in charge of inspectorate, a post he held until his retirement in 2001.

Mandy is credited with restoring order in schools, especially in the field of inspection and discipline and re-introduction of drama in schools which had stalled with the reign of former president Idi Amin in the 1970s. He is also recognised for restoring sanitation and hygiene in the districts he worked as RDC: He banned the wearing of slippers in public places and encouraged people to wear shoes.

Mandy, who will turn 60 next month, runs a private consultancy, Fagil Mandy Educational Consultancy, which deals with education evaluations. the cosnultancy also monitors student, teacher and parent training, facilitation of planning meetings, security training, public speaking and career guidance and counselling.
