Uganda: Malaba Council Meeting Turns Rowdy

Kampala — ARMED Police officers were on Friday deployed at Malaba town council offices after a fight broke out during a council meeting.

The speaker, Rose Mary Asio, wanted to implement a directive by the Inspector General of Government to remove the area LC3 chairman, George Alfred Obore, from office.

But Obore had secured a temporary court injunction challenging the decision.

The injunction also restrained the speaker, her agents and workmates from removing Obore from his position.

Obore was accused of renting out his residential house to the council to use as offices. He was accused of conflict of interest.

He was also accused of stealing sh7m meant for the payment of council lawyers.

He opposed his indictment, saying the conflict of interest cited by the IGG could not apply, adding that he had declared his assets.

Obore also said Asinge councillor Deo Emusugut and the speaker, who were involved in the decision to move council offices to his house in 2005, had to disassociate themselves from the debate.

Asio advised Obore to seek redress from court, adding that she was ready to implement the IGG's directive, a move that sparked off a quarrel between Obore's supporters and those against him.

The speaker was pelted with mineral water bottles by members of the public in attendance.

Obore nearly fell to the ground with Emusugut as the whole meeting turned into a boxing arena.

The situation was contained when a pick-up full of armed Police officers, arrived.
