Kampala — THE works ministry is to amend the law so that motorists whose recklessness causes fatal accidents are given deterrent punishments.
Transport state minister Simon Ejua on Friday said: "The existing laws need a bit of amendment to make the punishments punitive. We are doing our best to analyse them."
He was speaking to reporters at the Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala recently after the fourth joint transport sector review workshop.
Ejua cited the laws on recklessness and a vehicle's mechanical condition as some of those that needed to be revised.
He added that the Cabinet was discussing the required changes before Parliament debates and passes the revised laws.
Ejua was responding to a question from a reporter who asked what the ministry was doing to curb the increasing number of accidents.
Over 50 people perished in motor accidents in the past two months.
Ejua also said there were plans to ensure that contracts for major road projects were shared out between companies to avoid delays.
Ejua also announced that the Government would soon revive the Kampala-Kasese railway line.
