Zimbabwe: Embassy Donates U.S.$5 000 Books

5 November 2008

Harare — The Japanese Embassy, through the Japan Foundation Library Support Programme, has donated US$5 000 worth of books to the Catholic University in Zimbabwe.

Speaking at the hand-over ceremony at the university yesterday, Japanese Ambassador to Zimbabwe Mr Koichi Morita said this was the seventh time the Library Support Programme had extended support to Zimbabwe and the fifth donation to a local university since 2002.

"We have made donations to the Zimbabwe Open University, University of Zimbabwe, Africa University and Midlands State University. We have also donated books to Harare City Library and Mzilikazi Memorial Library.

"I hope these books will be helpful to students in understanding Japanese culture, history, politics and economy, while at the same time bridging the gap between our two countries that are geographically very far from each other," Mr Morita said.

The embassy donated 41 volumes of history, society and culture books.

Catholic University rector Mr Simon Nondo said the donation was crucial especially at a time when Zimbabwe had embarked on a Look East Policy.

"Zimbabweans need to have a deep understanding of Eastern countries to complement Government's Look East Policy otherwise it becomes null and void if we lack knowledge of the countries we are dealing with," Mr Nondo said.
