Kampala — UGANDANS have been hit by 'Obama-mania', after Barrack Obama was yesterday elected the first African-American president of the US.
Yusuf Musisi Kasenge, a businessman on Gayaza Road in Wandegeya, said he had organised a big celebration at his home if Obama was declared US president.
He said he had ordered 50 T-shirts, to distribute to his neighbours and friends, whether he was declared winner or not.
"I could not go to the US to contribute to the Obama campaign, but I have a lot of joy for him that US citizens have supported him to that extent," Musisi said. He said Obama's fame had inspired many Africans and improved Africa's image not only in the US but also worldwide.
"Many black Africans have gone to the US and contributed a lot. It is good that the rest have started appreciating this," he said.
Musisi, who wore an Obama badge, said when some people saw a big Obama poster at his house, they donated the badge to him.
Musisi gave T-shirts to his two daughters, Lucky Nakajjuuko and Elizabeth Nakasenge, both pupils of Kitante Primary School in Kampala. He said the girls were ardent supporters of Obama. The girls, on a short holiday, said they watched television and updated their father about Obama's progress.
"We love Obama because he is a good man and we never missed his coverage on television. We always updated our father about the US elections," the girls said.
Mustafa Mawanda, who works in St. Balikuddembe (Owino) market, said his sister from the US had sent him a T-shirt bearing Obama's picture, which he considered his best gift so far.
"Many people have demanded to buy this T-shirt from me but I can't sell it," he said.
