Windhoek — There might be no Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson for that matter, but the annual MTC Namibia PGA Championship promises fireworks when the country's leading golfers tee off at the Windhoek Country Club Golf Course at 09h00 later this morning.

The prestigious competition will be preceded by a Pro Am tourney this morning with 36 teams, one professional and three amateur golfers at the tee.

The first professional to hit a hole in one on the 9th hole during the final round of the MTC Namibia PGA Championship 2008 stands to walk away with a brand new Volvo XC 90 with a market valuation of N$540 000.

A strong field of South African golfers has entered the fray with several others from Zimbabwe, Malawi, Kenya, Nigeria, Madagascar, Lesotho, China, Finland, Serbia, England and Swaziland all eyeing the N$158 500 first prize.

The runner-up will receive a sizable cheque of N$115 000 with the third placed golfer to be consoled with a purse of N$69 200 while those finishing in the top ten bracket, will also walk away with cash prizes, ranging from N$49 100 to N$19 600.

The four-day tourney carries a whopping prize of N$1 000 000 that will see 156 professional golfers swinging the clubs over 72 holes of stroke play with a cut to the leading 65 professionals and those who tie on the score.

All previous winners of the MTC Namibia PGA Championship will be notable absentees with the exception of Mark Murless, who won the maiden edition in 2004.

Veteran golfer Andre Basson leads a strong Namibian contingent of top golfers in the mould of Joe Nawanga, Christopher Durant, Jaco Van Reenen and Alec Williams, whilst the likes of former world acclaimed sprinter Frank Fredericks, Schalkie van der Merwe, Francois Hanekom, Tian Faure and Manu Iyambo will be rubbing shoulders with professional golfers from around the world.
