The Tin-can Island command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted arms and 1,767 rounds of ammunition concealed in three jeeps being illegally imported into the country and has also detained four persons said to include the consignee and the agent.

While handing over the items which includes 1,767 rounds of ammunition, two pistols, two single barrel riffles and three short pump action riffles to the port police authority, Customs Area Controller (CAC) of the command, David Agbaje, told journalists that they were brought into the country from the United States of America (USA).

Agbaje explained that the items were hidden in their glove compartment and floor of the three jeeps and that the vehicles have been impounded.

The Customs boss who noted that the illegal goods were intercepted on Friday during examination, stressed that but for the vigilance of the officers and men of the Command the items would have successfully passed through the port.

He said after the discovery of the arms and ammunition during the examination, the agent who was present at the time was immediately detained and he then led officers to the consignee who was also detained.

He advised everyone with the intention of importing illegal or contraband goods through Tin-can Island Command to desist from it because there would be no escape for any such importer.

He pointed out that investigation is still on going to unveil the whole truth concerning the case.

In his response, the Port Authority Police Commissioner, Thomas S. Lamordi, thanked the Customs and assured that proper investigation would be carried out and those found to be guilty would be charged to court.
