Uganda: Varsity Students Want Food Allowance Increased

Gulu — Students of Gulu University have gone on strike over food allowances. The students have vowed to continue with the strike until the university administration meets their interests. The students say the current food allowance is not enough to cater for them.

A source within the university administration who asked not to be named because he is not authorised to talk to the media, said students carried banners and marched to the administration block on Monday, shouting "we need food allowances increment".

The Guild President, Mr Okidi Christopher, said: "These students need allowances increment but they are not patient enough; they need to counter Sudanese nationals who are buying away food stuff at less negotiable prices," he said.

The government sponsored students are paid Shs2,500 per day as food allowance. The Dean of Students, Mr Egwel Odyiomo said: "The issue of feeding is affecting education in every public university," he said. Mr Egwel said Gulu University and other public universities are underfunded.
