Uganda: Thirteen Students Arrested Over Ple Malpractices

Kampala — Police have arrested 13 students of Happy Hours High School and three teachers for sitting Primary Leaving Examinations. The students, whose identities had not yet been revealed by press time, were arrested at Happy Hours Primary School in Kawempe for sitting two PLE papers; English and Social Studies on Monday. The students are currently detained at Kampala Central Police Station.

Police Spokesperson Judith Nabakooba told Daily Monitor yesterday that they have arrested the head-teacher of Happy Hours High School, Mr Peter Mutebi, the director of studies, Mr Godwin Ongeso, and the Director of Happy Hours Primary School, Mr Willy Kibuuka. The three are at Kawempe Police Station.

"We have arrested the students on allegations of impersonation and we are holding the teachers on offences of uttering false documents, conspiracy to commit a demeanour, aiding and abetting," Ms Nabakooba said.

The Uganda National Examination Board (Uneb) Public Relations' Officer, Ms Eva Konde, confirmed the arrests. "It is true the students and their teachers have been arrested. We shall reveal the fate of both schools when the exams are released," Ms Konde said.
