Angola: World Bank to Monitor Indicators in Country

Luanda — The minister of Urbanisation and Housing, Diekumpuna Sita José, on Tuesday in Nanjing, China, had a meeting with the director of the economy and development department of the World Bank, Abha Ghani, with whom he discussed the possibility of that international financial institution to monitor the urban indicators, as well as the cities in Angola.

The two interlocutors concluded that in the second fortnight of December, a technical commission led by the director of the global cities department of the Toronto University Centre for Studies, Patricia McCarney, should come to Angola to facilitate the negotiations between the Angolan government and the World Bank.

This move should start with the promotion of a workshop on urbanisation and housing, with the partnership of the UN-Habitat.

The meeting, which took place in the sidelines of the fourth World Urban Forum, was attended by the Angolan representative to the United National Programme for Human Settlements (UN-Habitat), Ambrósio Lukoki, who is also ambassador to Tanzania.

For this Wednesday, Diekukumpuna Sita José is to meet with the UN under secretary-general and executive director of the UN-Habitat, Anna Tibaijuka, for an assessment and signing of agreements on the principles relating to technical assistance for Angola, in the ambit of housing projects and urbanisation challenges.

The fourth World Urban Forum, which is being promoted by the UN-Habitat, taking place in Nanjing City (China), held on Tuesday a plenary session of ministers of Urbanisation and Housing.

According to sources with the UN-Habitat, the fifth World Urban Forum is set to take place in Brazil, in 2010.
