The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has sentenced seven drug traffickers arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) Abuja to 46 and half years imprisonment.
The convicts who were sentenced in the month of October 2008 were arrested for attempting to traffic various quantities of cocaine to Europe .
The honourable Chairman/Chief Executive of the NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade was particularly pleased with the sentence of one of the convicts, Felix Ejis Oraegbunam, 47 years old that got the highest jail term of 15 years without an option of fine. He was caught on April 4, 2008 with 2.6 kilogrammes of cocaine. According to Giade, "this judgement will help to deter people from the illicit drug trade".
Two of the convicts Emechebe Anthony, 31, caught with 600 grammes of cocaine on March 13, 2008 and Etuk Oluwakemi Patience, 37 years old caught with 700 gramms of cocaine got seven and half years imprisonment each. Aguma Hyacinth, 36, arrested on April 26, 2008 with 1.3 kilogrammes of cocaine was sentenced to 7 years imprisonment.
Samuel Joseph Meka, 23, arrested with 4.3 kilogrammes of cocaine on July 24, 2008 got 3 years with an option of N200, 000 fine. Opkala Chukwononso Brendan, 39, caught with 1.2 kilogrammes of cocaine was sentenced to 2 and half years imprisonment while Onyinaya Joseph Ugochukwu, 34 years arrested with 1 kilogramme got one and half year jail term.
