Uganda: Water Hyacinth Threatens Fishing on L. Kyoga

Nakasongola — Fishing activities on Lake Kyoga have been threatened by the fast spreading water hyacinth.

Nakasongola District chairman James Muruli told Daily Monitor yesterday that the weed had spread to six landing sites, threatening the livelihood of the residents. "The deadly water weed has made a fast comeback on the lake four years after an Egyptian company tried to clear it," Mr Muruli said.

"We have made attempts to remind the government but our constant reminders have not yet yielded fruit."

The landing sites affected include Zengebe, Kikoiro, Kibuye, Lwampanga, Kikalaganya and Kasambya.

"This weed makes it difficult for residents to fish yet it accounts for over 80 per cent of their daily income," district speaker Nuwa Mutebi said.
