After a disappointing season, Uganda's senior athletes are looking to the IAAF World Cross-country Championships due next March in Jordan to revive their careers. The cross-country event marks the beginning of the international season which will climax with the World Championships in Berlin, Germany in August.
As expected, the Ugandan team to Jordan will be led by Olympics fourth-placer Moses Kipsiro and Boniface Kiprop, a very talented runner, whose career has been hampered by injuries and poor form.
The World Cross-country has a total of Sh616m in cash prizes to be shared by individual performers and teams, motivation for Ugandan runners, who have of late joined the world's elite class that makes a fortune from competitions.
"There are some new guys who will beef up our squad net year. I believe with two or three additions, we shall be able to win big," Kipsiro, who scooped Shs33m after finishing second at the World Athletics Final in Berlin in August said.
And Kipsiro's assertions cannot be dismissed. Benjamin Kiplagat and Geoffrey Kusuro, two of Uganda's most promising runners, will be graduating to the senior level next year and will add muscle to the team. Former world steeplechase champion Dorcus Inzikuru is also hoping to make a comeback and lead Uganda's women team to glory.
