Ghana's Civil Service has called for more comprehensive training for all Records Management personnel in the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in the country.

This would help bridge the deep seated skill gap which existed among records management practitioners as well as to improve their performance so as to enable them contribute to the development of Ghana.

Additionally, the lack of soft skills to ensure successful Records Management in the service underscored the intrinsic need for more relevant training interventions to enable practitioners to provide quality service to their organisations.

To this end, the Office of Head of the Civil Service in collaboration with the Commonwealth Secretariat has organized and sponsored a two-week programme for 25 Records Management personnel in Accra. The 25 participants who benefited from the programme were drawn from the Ministries and Departments.

They comprised: 10 Records Officers, 10 Secretaries, four Executive Officers (Clerk) and one accountant.

The programme is also expected to train about 200 middle level Civil Servants for the effective discharge of their duties in the management of records by the end of the year.

The consulting team was made up of Public Records and Archives Administration Department (PRAAD), which discharged their duties creditably and professionally by taking a broad view of the programme to create intellectual capital.

Apart from focusing on the basic skills development, which is the manual handling of records, they also afforded participants a peep into how to use technology to manage records, especially electronic records management.

The participants were made to provide action plans which would be followed up after two months to keep track of the performance of all beneficiaries of the programme.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, the Head of the Civil Service Training Centre, Mrs. Dora Dei-Tumi observed that the exercise has exposed another skills defect, saying most of the records personnel were not computer literate.
