Ghana: Germany to Revive Country's Railway Sector

Stephen Odoi-Larbi

5 November 2008

The German government's pledge to revive the Ghana railway system has gathered momentum, as a two-man delegation from the Federal Republic of Germany on Tuesday entered into agreement with the Ghana government, in Accra.

The move by the delegation was in fulfillment of the German Chancellor, Angel Merkel's pledge to President John Agyekum Kufuour when he visited Germany recently, to encourage more investment flow into the country.

The delegation was led by Dr. Otto Wiesheu, a member of the Deutsche Balm (German railway) to conduct feasibility and cost calculation on the Eastern rail lines.

The Minister of Ports Harbours and Railways, Professor Christopher Ameyaw Akumfi and Dr. Otto Wiesheu initialed for their respective countries.

The feasibility study under the agreement would be conducted on the Accra-Kumasi via Boankra inland port, Kumasi-Paga through Buipe, to connect the Volta lake, Achimota-Tema port, Tamale-Yendi to connect Sheini iron deposit, Bosusi-Kibi to connect the bauxite deposit at Kibi and branch lines linking the towns where other mineral deposits have been identified.

Prof. Akumfi in his address expressed profound gratitude to the German government for its commitment to revive the Ghana rail sector. According to him, so many investors who expressed desire to assist Ghana modernize its rail sector later fizzled out. He therefore expressed the belief that with the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the German government, modernization of the country's rail sector will this time be a reality.

Dr. Wiesheu on his part thanked the Ghana government for creating an enabling environment for the investors to do business in the country without fear. He was of the belief that their partnership with the Ghana government would yield positive results to benefit the entire nation.
