Kampala — A student of Kibibi Secondary School who gave birth last month has been allowed to sit for her A' Level final examinations. However, she has been instructed not to interact with other students.
The education ministry recently wrote to the head teacher, Abby Mukiibi, asking him to let the student do the examinations.
"The student should be allowed to sit the examinations as a day scholar. She should only be allowed in school when she has an examination.
Other than in the examination room, the student should not be allowed to mix with the rest of the students," secondary education commissioner Yusuf Nsubuga wrote in an October 29 letter. Senior Six examinations begin today with the candidates' briefing.
Nsubuga said the conditions were meant to protect the moral and ethical integrity of the school owners so that the case does not set a bad example to the rest of the students. Kibibi S.S is a Muslim-founded school.
Nansamba was dismissed from the school when she became pregnant, but she had already registered for her Advanced Level examinations at the school. The school administration had blocked her from sitting the examinations.
According to Mukiibi's letter to Nansamba, she is not even allowed to rent a room near the school. "Day scholars reside in their parents' homes and are not allowed to rent in the nearby trading centres.
The parent must accompany her to school for each paper and she must leave immediately after each examination. The student should not be allowed to mix with other students," the letter says.
Nansamba's mother, Jalia Nambooze, yesterday said the conditions were too stringent, adding that they would stress her daughter.
"The conditions indicate that I am supposed to accompany her to school everyday. She is not even allowed to talk to other students. This is not fair," she said yesterday.
Nambooze added that there was still uncertainty about whether Nansamba will be allowed to do examinations.
A teacher at the school said other students had been warned against interacting with Nansamba.
He said the students risk being dismissed if caught holding any discussion with Nansamba.
