Uganda: Bobi Wine Secures Pro Boxing License

Kampala — Singer Bobi Wine has been given the green light by the Uganda Professional Boxing Commission (UPBC) to turn join professional boxing ranks.

He will consequently feature on a December 19 card dubbed 'Question of Honour'.

The card has been organised by Pro Box Scandinavia and is to take place at Kati Kati Restaurant. UPBC secretary Mukisa Katongole told a press briefing that Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, was granted a license on condition that he abides by the rules and regulations that govern the sport. "We accepted his application and are now giving him a license. As the governing body, we can't deny licensing any one intending to join this profession so long as they can follow the rules," Katongole said.

It is mandatory for all professional boxers to undergo a medical examination before fighting. The self-styled 'Ghetto President' said he had joined boxing to clear the image of the sport in the country. "I have read all the rules and I have no problem. I will abide by them. As a well respected citizen I decided to join this sport because I want the public to cease that old image that boxing is a sport of thieves," he said.

Wine will be trained by Suleiman Kasule at TLC Club and will contest on the undercard in the lightweight. In the main card, Sweden-based fighters Peter 'Boyz Boyz' Ssemwogerere, Hassan 'Hitman' Ssaku and Abdul 'Cobra' Tebazalwa take on Russian opponents who are yet to be announced (TBA).
