An official of the government malaria control initiative has been highlighting the danger of malaria for mankind.
Tolbert Nyenswah, Acting Program Manager of the Liberia's National Malaria Control Program (NACP) at the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare said 38% of all reported illness at various hospitals in the country is caused by malaria, a deadly disease.
Besides placing percentage on illness caused by the disease, he also said it is the main cause of infant mortality amongst pregnant women in the country.
Mr. Nyenswah said the issue of malaria in Liberia is a serious, noting that it affects the lives of nearly all inhabitants of the state. At such, he said it needs the effort of every citizen and other nationals residing in the country to act, stressing that is a matter of must for those who have the capacity to help, to engage in the process now and without delay.
He hailed the efforts of the government and international organizations are applying in combating the disease, but noted that more needed to be done to curtail its continuity because it is growing at a high percentage.
He made the statement recently during programs marking the official close of three-day training in quantification of anti-malaria for pharmacists throughout the country. The training exercise was attended by participants drawn from the 15 sub- political divisions of the country, as well as staffs of the National Malaria Control Program, amongst others.
Mr. Nyenswah further said the only way the health sector will get on track in combating the disease depends on the ability of the partners to provide the needed mount of drugs to the country and its people.
"Those who are helping us must first know the quantity of patients suffering from malaria. The quantification of the individuals will be categorized in various groups including; pregnant women, children and adults," he said.
According to him, the total 25 persons attended the three days training at the Cape Hotel in Monrovia. It was organized and sponsored by both the Malaria Control Program and President Bush Malaria Initiative through the U. S. based organization, Management Sciences for Health.
He urged the participants to practicalize what they have learned from the training for past three days so that Liberia will get the needed result. He noted that if they (participants) fail to practice they have been taught, the resources used for the training will become a waste.
Speaking for the Management Sciences for Health -Liberia, Lloyd Matowe said his organization remains committed to helping Liberia combat malaria. He said Liberia is the only African country that is cooperative in the endeavor the create awareness and fight the disease.
He promised to work closely with the Liberian government in defeating the deadly and most common disease in Africa "Malaria".
Tappita Flood Victims Provided For
The opposition Liberty Party has identified with victims of the September 23, 2008 flood disaster in Tappita, Nimba County. The party's donation to the flood victims included ten bags of rice, eighteen dozens of plastic dishes and two sacs of salt.
The party in a statement issued to the effect said the presentation was made on its behalf and Political Leader, Cllr. Charles Brumskine by the Press and Public Affairs Director, Jacob Smith.
The presentation was made in the presence of Tappita District Superintendent, Mr. Man Biah Vanmore, the Mayor of Tappita, Sarah Z. Mendandoabor and the party local chairman, Eleazar Gbengan.
In his presentation, Mr. Smith said the Liberty Party was aware of the magnitude of the situation and was overtaken with deep compassion that a war wearied people trying to restart their lives would face such human suffering. He said the items hurriedly arranged in response to the emergency nature of the problem.
The Liberty Party official used the occasion to call on national government to fully equip the National Disaster Relief Commission so that it will be in the position to effectively respond to such state of affair, adding that in times like these, it was imperative that state resources be allocated wisely to bring relief to the people.
Red Cross Coordinator in Tappita, Mr. Moses Yeazeah commended the Liberty Party for its show of concern and assured that the items would be used for the intended purpose.
The Liberty Party Representative was led on a guided tour of the disaster area by some of the victims as well as members of the Red Cross in Tappita.
