Kampala — PRESIDENT Museveni on Thursday lauded Kampala International University (KIU) for its continued effort to promote girl-child education in the country.

In a speech read by first deputy premier, Eriya Kategaya, the president said KIU was greatly contributing to national progress. "Female education empowers them to be active participants in the development of our nation," Museveni said.

He added that the Government was committed to ensuring higher levels of education as a way of addressing the challenges that face the country.

This was at the university's fifth graduation ceremony at which a total of 2,322 students attained diplomas, undergraduate and masters degrees. Of these, 852 were female.

In his speech, the university's chancellor, Justice George Kanyeihamba, urged the graduands to build character. "What makes someone successful is not their outward title or social status, but the ability to stand for honesty, integrity and character," he said.

The university's owner and head of the board of trustees, Hassan Bassajabalaba, thanked the Government for its continued support, saying the university had developed tremendously and now employs 118 staff with doctorate degrees, up from four at its inception in 2001.

The best student was Zipora Waithia from the Faculty of Computer Studies who got a cumulative grade point average of 4.78.

Other high achievers included Hamedi Hamis from Social Sciences department, Shikuku Caroline from Faculty of Law, Olongui Shadrack from the education faculty and Frederick Oduor from the Business faculty.
