Reno — An Angolan delegation, headed by the minister of Science and Technology, Emanuela Vieira Lopes, is in Reno, Nevada, United State of America, to attend the conference on Nuclear Energy, at the invitation of the American Nuclear Society.
The information is contained in a note from Angolan Embassy to the USA that reached Angop on Saturday, saying the delegation includes the ambassador to that country, Josefina Diakite.
According to the note, the programme of the conference includes two seminars on professional development and operational efficiency in matters of energetic and nuclear potential.
The programme includes several technical sessions, a nuclear technology exhibition and a visit to Nevada Arts Museum.
At the event, Angola will address the panel on "Perspectives for nuclear energy in developing countries."
The presentation will be done by minister Emanuela Lopes, and will focus on the importance of atomic energy in the human development in general and in the resolution of problems related to health and socio-economic stability of the populations.
According to the the programme, the participants will also have the opportunity to ask Angolan delegation questions about the country's plans on nuclear energy and proposals for the development of the energetic needs.
Angola is a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) since 1999.
Ever since, the country has been designing, promoting and developing its nuclear and technological programme, through the Unit for Science and Nuclear Technology (UNST), set up by the Ministry of Science and Technology, in July 2000.
The Cabinet Council is the country's authority that coordinates all atomic activities, including the responsibility to strengthen cooperation with the IAEA.
In 2007, the National Assembly (Parliament) approved the Atomic Energy Law and created the concerned regulatory authority.
Angolan Government programme for the 2009-2011 period includes three new projects in the fields of teaching of nuclear physics, radio-therapy and nuclear medicine, radioactive infrastructures, soil fertility studies etc.
Also according to the programme, on the fringes of the meeting, Angolan delegation will meet with professor Andrew Kadak, to discuss future nuclear initiatives in the country.
