9 November 2008

Gedo — Residents in Somalia's Luq town said thousands of people have been displaced by flash flooding in the southwest part of the country.

Officials said Saturday's floods followed after Jubba river has broken its banks in the town that destroyed large farmlands.

They said many of the displaced are living in makeshift shelters in elevated areas around the town.

Officials said water levels in Gedo region are rising, creating fears of more flooding.

Memories of the widespread impact of the December floods have stocked up fear among the locals living along the river. "If it rains heavily in the Ethiopian highlands and in Hiran, it will affect us again," said the deputy governor. "Resident man Yonis Husein said.

The combination of floods, poor rainfall and conflict has made the humanitarian situation in the regions as the country has been in wars for more than 19 years.
