Angola:Local Writers Defend Regular Books Fair Holding

9 November 2008

Luanda — The Angolan writer António Fonseca and Albino Carlos defended last Saturday in Luanda, the necessity of holding regular books fair countrywide, so as to stimulate the habit for reading.

Speaking to the press on the fringes of the second book fair dubbed "Tenda das Letras" that was opened last Saturday and is to end this Sunday, the writers mentioned the absence of activities in the interior of the country, to promote Angolan authors.

According to Albino Carlos, Angolan writers should be known by the readers and by the population in general, therefore it is necessary to hold events of this kind throughout the country.

On his turn, António Fonseca noted that Angolan authors normally only promote their books in Luanda, so it is difficult to diffuse their literary work countrywide.

António Fonseca also defends the need for the creation of more literature prizes, so as to encourage the youths to be interested in reading and literature.

António Fonseca, Albino Carlos and António Setas were the invited writers by the National Institute for Books and Discs (INALD) to autograph their works during the two-day event.

Besides the invited authors, ten editors and bookshops were also present in the first day of the second edition of "Tenda das Letras".

According to Hélder Sousa, assistant head of the Portuguese editing company "Plural Editores", initiatives of this kind can bring to the Angolan public all the various literary works that have been published.

On 15 and 16 November "Tenda das Ideias" will hold a similar activity in front of Kilamba cultural centre, in Rangel district, with other authors to autograph their works.

"Tenda das Letras", was created two years ago by INALD.

So far this event has only been taking place in Luanda.
