Angola: 2008 Culture and Arts Award Handover

Luanda — The winners of the 2008 edition of the Culture and Arts Award Friday in Luanda received their respective prizes during a gala, held at Cine Tropical.

Sponsored by the Ministry of Culture (Mincult), the ceremony was part of the celebrations of November 11, National Independence Day, having each received a bronze statuette, a diploma and a cheque for Usd 35,000.

The gala, which was also attended by the prime minister, António Paulo Kassoma, included a dance and music show with the participation of Yaka ballet group, national instrumentalists and Banda Maravilha music band.

This edition, the National Culture and Arts Awards were given to Paulo Flores (music), José Luandino Vieira (literature) and Grupo Elinga Teatro (theatre).

Also awarded, posthumously, was the Angola Public Television director, Carlos Henriques, in the category of cinema and audio-visual. Carlos Manuel Lopes took the prize in the category of human and social sciences research and Francisco Van-Dúnem in plastic arts.

The National Culture and Arts Award, an annual event, is sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and aims at stimulating artistic creativity and promoting movie and audio-visual production quality.
