Tororo — OVER sh100m has been earmarked to temporarily rehabilitate the dilapidated Malaba parking yard that has paralysed revenue inflow, a Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) official has said.
James Mwesigwa, the URA supervisor in charge of assessment, told the parliamentary accounts committee, that the arrangement was tentative, pending a major World Bank project.
Mwesigwa received the committee members on behalf of the regional manager, James Abodi.
The MPs were assessing the state of the terminal.
Mwesigwa said rehabilitation of the terminal would include digging trenches, fixing potholes and covering the yard with layers of murram.
"The World Bank offered to transform the border terminals of Uganda and Kenya. Work at the Kenyan side has been completed. Work on the Ugandan side is yet to commence."
Mwesigwa explained that due to the World Bank arrangement, URA had been reluctant to inject in a lot of money.
"More money would have been committed to facilitate the works, but when the World Bank project commences, there is a possibility that everything in place will be wrecked."
Recently, heavy truck drivers went on a sit-down strike.
