Uganda: Illegal Nets Impounded

Jinja — The Beach Management Unit (BMU) officials at Masese landing site on Lake Victoria, in Walukuba-Masese division, have impounded over 300 illegal fishing gear.

In an ongoing operation against unauthorised fishing methods on the lake, the BMU, together with Walukuba Police, also arrested 106 fishermen.

They said many more were still on the run. Magid Magumba, the Masese BMU chairperson, last week said 125 of the impounded items were under-size fishing nets, 96 monofilaments, 32 were cast-nets and 54 beach seines.
