Kampala — MEMBERS of the accountability committees of Parliament have been trained in auditing.
The public accounts committee, the local government accounts committee and the commission, statutory authorities and state enterprises committee on Friday retreated to Entebbe for training.
The two-day training workshop was aimed at improving the MPs' oversight role and management of Government funds.
Opening the workshop, Speaker Edward Ssekandi said Parliament needed to strengthen systems of governance and accountability. He added that accountability creates opportunities for the people, ensures provision of better services and improves development outcomes.
"Parliament controls the public purse through approval of budget estimates and through scrutiny of the public accounts," Ssekandi said.
The New Vision company secretary Gervase Ndyanabo said independence and objectivity were key to any internal audit activity. He cautioned auditors against subordinating their judgments.
Ndyanabo also warned against accepting gifts, saying it could create an appearance that objectivity had been impaired.
