Kampala — A 21-year-old man who has been mimicking voices of several government and UPDF officials to con people has been arrested.
Mike Baguma Mugarura ran out of luck when he mimicked Lt. Gen. Salim Saleh's voice and managed to secure a job in the government of South Sudan. Saleh who is the microfinance state minister, is also a brother to President Yoweri Museveni.
Posing as Saleh, Baguma allegedly called Rebecca Garang, wife to the late South Sudan leader John Garang, asking her to give his (Saleh's) son a job. Baguma was given a job as the records manager in the South Sudan ministry of finance where he was earning a weekly pay of $175 (about sh346,500) since August this year. He had also been given a car for his transport.
But when Mrs Garang said she was going to visit Saleh in Kampala in October, Baguma sensed danger and fled to Kampala. This is when security personnel, who had been looking for him, arrested him. Baguma was yesterday last Friday paraded before the press at the Rapid Response Unit (RRU) headquarters in Kireka, a Kampala suburb.
The Police spokesperson Judith Nabakooba said, Baguma was nabbed on Tuesday in Mityana on his way to Fort Portal. RRU chief David Magara said Baguma had earlier conned several other people including the Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura.
He also reportedly conned ministers, Chief Administrative Officers, town clerks, bank managers and businessmen in town. Baguma can mimic any person's voice, the Police said.
"He has also been mimicking defence minister Crispus Kiyonga and foreign minister Sam Kuteesa to defraud,"said Nabakooba.
