Uganda: MP Masiko Charged With Embezzlement

Kampala — BUGANDA Road Court on Friday issued another criminal summon for Rukungiri Woman MP Winifred Masiko.

Masiko is wanted at Buganda Road Court to answer charges in connection with embezzling sh130m from the Global Fund.

Her lawyer, Ntambirweki Kandeebe, asked Court to give her two weeks since she had travelled to Turkey on official duty. State Attorney Alice Komuhangi did not oppose the application. The presiding magistrate, Francis Kobusheshe, extended the summon to November 21.

Masiko, who is also the executive director of Rukungiri Gender and Development Association, is accused of mismanaging the funds which her organisation received, prosecution said.

The Police had earlier vowed to arrest Masiko if she did not appear in court, but prosecution did not ask for an arrest warrant.

Masiko is facing 34 charges related to mismanaging the funds. Some of the charges include forgery and false accounting. Claiming to be participants of a workshop on HIV/AIDS between July 2004 and December 2005, Masiko and other suspects received money after forging payment vouchers bearing the name of Rugada NGO, Prosecution said.

Other suspects charged earlier include Teddy Ssezi Cheeye, the director of economic monitoring in the Internal Security Organisation.
