Tunis — Two Tunisian companies were recently invited by the Euro-Mediterranean industry ministers' Conference held in Nice, France on November 5 and 6, 2008 to showcase their success stories to the conference.
The two Tunisian companies, respectively COFAT and STMicroelectronics, were retained by the conference owing notably to their success in integrating the Euro-Mediterranean area.
Mrs Selma Rekik Elloumi, the CEO of COFAT, a provider of automotive parts and cables, presented her company set up in 1984. Since then, apart from Tunisia, the company has managed to set up plants in Egypt, Morocco, Portugal, Malaysia and Romania. She indicated that the company started out with 20 jobs and now employs 7000 people, thanks she said to a development strategy "based on innovation".
Noting that 90% of its turnover came from exports, she added that COFAT now aims at establishing itself in South America in 2009.
The second Tunisian success story, namely STMicroelectronics, which operates plants all over the world, established itself in Tunisia in 2001. The company's CEO, Mr Alain Dutheil said that Tunis had been selected to host the company's development, process and conception centers, "a choice justified by Tunisia's skilled personnel, as well as the cooperation set up with training schools and universities", he said.
STMicroelectronics which employs some 45,000 people throughout the world had a net turnover of 10 billion dollars in 2007.
