Damaturu — Senator Bukar Abba Ibrahim, representing Yobe Zone A in the Senate, has expressed displeasure at the non-completion of the Damaturu regional water project which was started long ago by the federal government.
He called on the government to, as a matter of urgency, complete the project to ameliorate the suffering of the people. Bukar lamented that the non-completion of the project which had reached advanced stage had subjected the people of Damaturu and environs to serious hardships occasioned by diseases as they had to spend a lot of money daily to purchase water from vendors.
Kanem Trust reports that a reservoir which has the capacity to store five million litres of water has reached over 80 percent completion, while a concrete elevated tank which can pump one million litres of water to the Damaturu metropolis is equally nearing completion, but the projects have stopped.
Engineers at the site told Senator Bukar, who was on constituency tour, that about 35 boreholes had been completed and were expected to be supplying the reservoir with water on daily basis.
Apostle Gerard Ihesino, who was in charge of the construction of the reservoirs, said if the federal government could release funds, the whole project would be completed soon.
In his response, Senator Bukar lamented that the Damaturu water project was awarded by former President Olusegun Obasanjo but could not be completed up till now.
When I got to the senate, I channeled part of my constituency project funds into the Damaturu water project. I don't know what happened to the money", he enquired.
