Francistown — Botswana Congress Party (BCP) leader Gilson Saleshando is on a 10-day visit to Cuba.
This was announced yesterday by BCP secretary general Taolo Lucas, who said Saleshando is visiting the Communist Party of Cuba to familiarise himself with the operations and work of the communist party. Saleshando flew to Havana, the Cuban capital, on November 3.
"Whilst in Cuba, Saleshando will meet with several communist party officials and visit various places to see how the Cuban government functions. He will visit health and educational facilities and find out how they work. Saleshando is expected home on November 15," said Lucas.
Meanwhile, the BCP has also revealed that it will launch candidates in three key constituencies of Francistown South, Kgatleng East and Gaborone North.
According to the BCP secretary general, the launch of Francistown South parliamentary candidate Vain Mamela and council candidates will be on November 15 at Block 1 Freedom square. Lucas said the launch will be performed by vice president Dr Kesitegile Gobotswang.
In Kgatleng East, the launch of Phillip Monowe and his running mates will be on November 22 and Lucas will perform it in Mochudi. The following day at Gaborone North, the party president (Saleshando) will launch Motsei Rapelana as the party candidate.
"All three constituencies are priority constituencies for the BCP. In Francistown South BCP has two councillors, in Kgatleng East, we have five councillors and in Gaborone North, we have two. The performance of the BCP in these constituencies was impressive and with hard work, dedication and discipline, these constituencies could be won by the BCP in the 2009 general election," said Lucas.
"Our candidates in these constituencies are high profile persons who can make considerable impact in Parliament if elected. With the BDP government failing to deal with the problems of poverty, unemployment, income inequalities and corruption and with voters becoming increasingly aware that the BCP is a credible alternative, we hope to perform exceedingly well in these constituencies," Lucas added.
He stated that his party has proven and consistently so that it is united, organisationally coherent and clear in its message to the voters. This, he said, should put them in good stead to win these marginal constituencies. He revealed that other launches would follow next month.
