Cape Coast — The Trinidad and Tobago President, His Excellency George Maxwell Richards, on Wednesday visited the Cape Coast and Elmina castles, as part of his four-day visit to the country.
President Richards' entry into Cape Coast created the impression that it was President John Agyekum Kufuor, as motor riders rode through the principal street linking the Cape Coast Castle.
He entered the Castle in the company of Nana Ato Arthur, Central Regional Minister, who conducted him round.
Prof. Richards visited the male and female dungeons of the castles, and the gates of no return. He was in a quiet mood as he toured the castles to learn how slaves were transported to the new world, through the inhuman Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.
In a short remark, Prof. Richards said he visited the castles, owing to the role his country played in the organisation of the Panafest and Emancipation Days celebrations.
Nana Ato Arthur, on his part, said it was time for Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago to promote sister-city relations, to strengthen the bond between the two countries.
Prof. Richards arrived in the country on Monday, and has since held bilateral talks with President Kufuor, and visited the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, where a durbar was held in his honour.
He is expected to meet the Caribbean community in Accra on Thursday, before returning home.
