A number of male artists have got a hold on it. Jose Chameleone took it in 2003 and 2004; Mesach Semakula took it in 2005; Bobi Wine took it in 2006; and Ronald Mayinja in 2007. But this time round things had to change. Juliana Kanyomozi was crowned the best Artiste of The Year 2008 and the first woman to win this title.
The whole rite took place at Shimoni Grounds in Kampala last Saturday night after three years at Lugogo Cricket Oval. Juliana managed to scoop three awards as the best female artist, Rn'B artist and artist of the year. Other artists who walked away with three awards were Moze Radio and Weasel of the Nakudata fame who took home the Best New Artiste, Song of The Year (Nakudata) and Afrobeat Single for Zuena. Their rival Bebe Cool also took home three awards but this did not stop these artists showing publicly how far their grumble has reached as they exchanged bitter words each claiming to be the best. "I dedicate this award to Bebe Cool." said Radio sarcastically. When Bebe Cool was asked by MC Kazoora if he would do a remix of Zuena, the reply was "I only sing with musicians of a certain class." Implying that Moze Radio and Weasel are still kids as far as music is concerned.
Other artists who walked away with one or a couple of awards included Wilson Bugembe, winner of the Gospel Artiste of The Year title, Tonix of Beera Nange fame, Grace Nakimera of Anfukuula fame, Bobi Wine, Navio, DNL of Soda Jinjale fame, and many others.
