Suspected insurgents assassinated the deputy mayor of a town in south-central Somalia where the country's interim federal parliament is based, Radio Garowe reported Monday.
Hussein Runow, deputy mayor of Baidoa, died at the scene after sustaining several gunshots to the upper body, witnesses said.
Somali police units rushed to the scene of the crime but were not able to capture the killers.
Suspicion immediately fell on Islamist rebels who have rejected an October peace deal, which called for a ceasefire and the orderly withdrawal of Ethiopian forces.
In September, a Somali lawmaker was assassinated in Baidoa and the killers have yet to be brought to justice.
