Namibia: Iway Falls Prey to Hackers

11 November 2008

Windhoek — Computer criminals hacked into Iway's Internet website Sunday morning, totally replacing the website with a blank website and a rather catchy signature message of their criminal work of art.

The hackers posted a message 'Red Eye Attack Crew' in big red bold letters. Internet Services Provider Iway is a subsidiary of Telecom Namibia.

Several other clients of Iway had their websites hacked as well. Internet hackers tried to redirect people to pornographic sites.

Senior Manager for Marketing and Strategy at Iway Paulus Iipinge said the hackers only had two hours' control of Iway's website. "Our engineers resolved the problem quickly. Luckily we have trained brains in the country," said Iipinge.

Hackers are people who gain unauthorised access to Internet sites, through unethical and unacceptable ways, for the sole purpose of disrupting the intended use of the site, thus compromising, and at times stealing, the privacy of such site users.

Iipinge said the hacking did not result in any serious problem besides clients who could not access their mail through Iway. He said the company is putting up measures to restrict future hacking of similar nature.
