Ghana: NPP on Obama - U.S. Election Outcome Should Let Citizens Know That Violence Has No Place in Politics

In celebrating the election of Senator Barrack Obama as US President, Ghanaians have been advised to also learn some useful lessons.

Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, Campaign Director of NPP Presidential Candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo's Campaign Committee, in a statement released yesterday, after the US elections, said, "Americans made the decision to elect Mr. Obama based on the peculiar circumstances in their country...Throughout his campaign, Senator Obama offered hope, new ideas, strong and effective leadership and inclusiveness."

Obama's victory, he said, is a vindication of a campaign of ideas and rebuke to the politics of insult, vindictiveness, divisiveness and negativity. Dr. Apraku said despite the enormous stakes involved and how keen the competition was, there was no violence. This, he said, should let Ghanaians know that violence has no place in politics.

"Those who have invoked the Kenya/Zimbabwe models for Ghana must rethink their approach to politics...They must join us in helping Ghana to emulate the American example and become an example for the Kenyas and Zimbabwes of our world," he said.

The NPP Campaign Director said Obama's statement that, "...this victory is not the change we seek, but a chance to make the change we seek," should remind Ghanaians that change for the sake of change is not enough. "Ghanaian must vote for the party which has made their lives better and will transform our country...and that party is the NPP," he said.

The NPP, Dr. Apraku said, hopes that Ghanaians would make history by electing Nana Akufo-Addo to succeed President Kufuor and send the NDC's Professor Mills packing to join John McCain in retirement.

Yesterday, US Ambassador to Ghana, Donald G. Teitelbaum hosted a "2008 Presidential Election Breakfast Celebration" during which he told guests that democracy was not just for those who are victorious in elections, but losers too, who equally have a stake and even bigger responsibility in ensuring that democracy works.
