7 November 2008

Asmara — President Isaias Afwerki today received and held talks with a Qatari delegation headed by Mr. Ahmed Bin Abdalla Al-Mahmoud, Minister of State in the Qatari Foreign Ministry.

In the meeting at the State Palace, the two sides conducted discussion on bilateral relations, as well as regional and international issues.

As regards the Sudanese issue, both sides discussed the efforts being made to promote peace in the Sudan in general and Qatar's initiative and the endeavors being exerted to provide added impetus to the initiative in particular.

The Qatari official told ERINA following the meeting that he delivered a message from the Emir of Qatar, Sheik Hamed Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, to President Isaias and indicated that the meeting focused on bilateral ties and ways of enhancing it. He asserted that he got the advice of President Isaias regarding the initiative taken by Qatar to promote security and stability in the Horn of Africa, especially towards resolving the Darfur issue.

It is to be recalled that in his meeting on 15 October in Doha with the Emir of Qatar, President Isaias asserted Eritrea's support to the effort and initiative of Qatar in resolving the Darfur issue.
