Luanda — Angolan minister of Foreign Affairs, Assunção dos Anjos, on Monday returned to the country after attending in Nairobi, Kenya, the International Conference on the Democratic Republic of Congo (RDC) summoned by the African Union (AU), and the SADC Extraordinary Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Speaking to the press at "4 de Fevereiro" international airport moments after his arrival, Assunção dos Anjos informed that participants to the Nairobi conference made serious decisions, such as the immediate ceasefire by the parties involved in the conflict in the North Kivu region and a humanitarian corridor was established so as to grant assistance to over two million displaced people.
"Participants to the aforementioned meeting also decided to create a team of mediators with personalities of prestige and renowned in the African continent, chaired by the president of Kenya, Mwai Kibaki and comprising the former presidents of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, and of Tanzania, Benjamin Mkapa, among other entities, with view to guarantee stability and the implementation of the accords signed for a definitive peace in DRC", he explained.
According to the minister, the officials also decided to reshuffle the UN Peacekeeping Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC) and that means were to be granted so as to solve the humanitarian crisis.
The North Kivu region is the battle ground of the Armed Forces of DRC (FARDC) against the rebels of the National Congress for the Defence of the People (CNDP) of the dissident general Laurent Nkunda.
After Kenya, the Angolan foreign minister attended in Johannesburg the extraordinary summit of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) which also analysed the situation in DRC and the post-electoral crisis in Zimbabwe.
