THE presidential candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has observed that he has not joined politics to enrich himself but rather to contribute his quota to the development of the country.
According to him, unlike other politicians who came to exploit the nation after crediting beans and gari, he has come to help the nation with his intellect.
Nana Akufo-Addo, who was addressing party supporters at Nima in Ayawaso East Constituency, in the Greater Accra region, last Friday, predicted the doom of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) saying the party would never come to power again.
He said the NDC had seen defeat looming ahead of it and had resorted to preaching tribalism and making allegations of rigging, among others.
"We are not interested in destabilising this nation. The fact still remains that Ghanaians have lost confidence in the NDC and it is clear that NDC would never come to power again."
The NPP Presidential candidate, who condemned threats of violence and disunity, said "We want politics of unity and solidarity. We are all Ghanaians and let nobody sow seeds of discord and disunity. We don't want tribal politics in this country," he said.
Nana Akufo-Addo, beaming with smiles of victory said it was untenable that the NDC would be accusing the NPP of hatching plans to rig the forthcoming election, adding, "How can we rig the elections? If you are playing football and you beat the person both at home and home, how then do you come to rig the elections? We don't even have the machinery to rig the elections."
Akufo-Addo, a lawyer by profession and the current legislator for Abuakwa North constituency in the Eastern Region, contended that "I am not hungry and I am not in politics to amass wealth. I have not come into politics to steal or to make money. If I need money, I know where to get it because I am one of the leading lawyers in the nation but I have come into politics to help achieve the dreams of our fore-fathers and to build the nation."
Re-affirming his determination to move the nation forward, Nana Akufo-Addo said since President Kufuor was able to make the basic school education free, he would also make the Senior High School free.
He parried the assertions of the NDC that the NPP was just deceiving Ghanaians.
"Tell the NDC that the way we managed to make the basic school education free of charge, we shall make that of the Senior High School in the same manner," adding that his dream was to completely eradicate illiteracy and to make sure that no child would be deterred by money to aspire for high education.
He also re-echoed his promise of industrialization and further entrenchment of democracy in the nation. Nana Akufo-Addo, who was accompanied by party bigwigs including, Mr. Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, Dr. Nyaho-Nyaho Tamakloe, Mr. Boakye Agyarko, Prof. Mike Oquaye, Mr. Kwabena Adjei Agyapong and a host of others, said if the NPP was given the chance to rule for almost 20 years, like the NDC had, the nation would have seen a better transformation by now.
He urged Ghanaians not to entrust the destiny of this nation into the hands of the NDC.
Other speakers at the rally included Mad Grace Omaboe, a.ka. Maame Dorkono, captain Rtd Effah-Dartey, Greater Accra Regional Minister, Sheik I. C Quaye, Alhaji Muctar Bamba, Alan Kyerematen and others.
Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe, Ghana's Ambassador to Serbia, contended that a vote for the NDC would be an end to freedom of democracy.
According to him, since he arrived in this nation and joined the campaign team of Nana Akufo-Addo, he has seen that there was no way that the NDC would come to power again.
