South Africa: Big Brother Africa - Comrade Thami

11 November 2008

interview

The laughing hyena, as he has affectionately been dubbed by BBA3 viewers, is the latest housemate to be evicted from the Big Brother Africa house.

South Africa's Thami, known for being something of a prankster, was up for possible eviction alongside his romantic love interest, Malawi's Hazel.

Shame, just when their old-school romance was starting to heat up a notch or two ...

NATASHA UYS chatted to Comrade Thami to find out if he is part of the ANC Youth League, what he really felt for Hazel and if he had won, what he would have done with the money.

How are you feeling today? I'm still sulking but I will get over it.

What was your initial strategy, going into the house? I don't think I really had much of a strategy, there were just a couple of things that I set out to do.

I wanted to entertain myself and Africa as long as possible, I never wanted to be part of any kind of clique and I didn't want to get emotionally attached.

Well, you kind of did get a little emotionally attached.

Do you miss Hazel? Funnily enough, I actually watched her during her diary room session this morning and yes, I have to be honest - I am missing her quite a bit.

When you were chatting to KB you kind of said that you wouldn't really have a problem moving on.

Were your feelings for Hazel real or was she just a pretty distraction? Being with her was something I wanted from the beginning of the show but we are in different stages of our lives.

She wants to settle down pretty soon and I have a more abstract concept of marriage.

So those issues are pretty hectic.

It would be lovely if it were all fireworks and romance but I have to be realistic.

Our relationship has not really been tested out in the real world.

Having said that, do you think your relationship will continue after the show ends? It's going to be very hard.

I struggle to maintain relationships when I am with the person, so trying to maintain a long distance relationship is monumental.

It's difficult to say, I don't want to preempt anything.

I guess I will have to sit down and discuss it with her.

You seem genuinely disappointed that you didn't win the money.

If you had won, what would you have done with the US$100 000? I think I probably would have blown it.

Maybe gone on a worldwide road trip.

I would have had as much fun as possible, finished the money and then got down to really working.

You seem quite interested in politics.

Are you a member of the ANC Youth League? After all the comments I made about the President, do you really think I am a member of the ANC Youth League? I don't think they would ever accept me as a member.

How do you feel about Barack Obama winning the US presidential election? I knew he would win.

As soon as he announced that he was running.

I am not surprised.

Very happy but not surprised at all.

He's got his work cut out for him.

I think he is going to end up spending his entire term cleaning up after [George W] Bush.

You and Tawana were like arch enemies.

Why did the two of you argue so often? Og.

The Tawana issue.

I think it all started with the fake eviction, when I found out who had nominated me.

When I got back to the house, Lucille was crying and she apologised for nominating me.

So that was fine, I got over that but Tawana, on top of that, then threw a candle holder at me.

So, it was definitely not the most beautiful of relationships.

Just when I was getting over that, thinking I was being a better man for even talking to her, she then told me that she found me irritating and that she had just been holding herself back.

I kept trying to tell her that you can't just blow up and tell someone whatever you like and expect everyone to be okay with it.

I don't think she really got it.

What do you think of your new nickname, Hyena? Well, while I was in the house, I really tried to embrace my inner African wild dog.

I've definitely got the strongest jaws around.

You know, when I was younger I really tried hard to change my laughter.

Make it cooler but I realised that it is something I do when I am really happy.

When I express my joy.

It's heartfelt.

Do you regret throwing the meat and cigarettes over the garden wall? No.

Not at all.

Essentially I think it was a really smart thing to do.

The nominight before I got really butchered and everyone was teasing me.

I didn't want everyone to feel sorry for me so throwing the meat and ciggies over the wall really worked because it diverted everyone's attention away from me.

There was none of that 'ag, shame' stuff the next morning because people were hungry and wanted to smoke.

Which task was your favourite? I think the UN stand up, take action campaign.

I really felt like we were doing something important.

Making a difference.

That was something I really felt passionate about.

And your least favourite? The baby one.

I am by far, not ready to be a dad any time soon.

I think that can wait until I am, like, 50 years old.

Which of the other BBA housemates would you like to stay in touch with? Morris, Hazel, Sheila, Lucille of course, and Uti.

What are your plans for the future? Besides making stacks and stacks of money? I recently started a company specialising in corporate identification, branding, websites and stuff, so I would like to concentrate on that.

Then I am also involved in a solar power business, so I will be looking into taking that further and then there is also an events management company.

We have been doing club parties and stuff but I would like to take it bigger.

Maybe start organising concerts and festivals and stuff.

Basically I just want to work hard and make lots of money.
