Tunis — The Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Technology has recently published a book retracing the history of higher education in Tunisia , entitled "Fiftieth anniversary of the Tunisian University: 1958-2008".
The publication of the book coincides with the celebrations underway (November 11 and 12, 2008) of the 50 th anniversary of the creation of the Tunisian University;
The publication includes a foreword by President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, as well as a preface of the Minister of Higher Education, Mr Lazhar Bououni.
In his foreword, the President of the Republic writes that "the proclamation of the Republic and the creation of the Tunisian University at the dawn of independence are the incarnation of the aspirations of the Tunisian people in its thirst for development, modernity, science and knowledge, as well as the extension of Tunisia's natural role since ancient times, as a beacon of civilisation illuminating both its internal and external environment".
In his preface, Mr Bououni evokes the changes witnessed by higher education in Tunisia, stressing that since the November 7, 1987 Change, several higher education institutions have settled in many of the country's governorates, contributing to the training of competences in all sectors, as well as enabling a fruitful interaction with the economic environment.
The book comprises 8 chapters retracing the history of the Tunisian University from Carthage to the modern Republic, and notably the reform in the diploma system, dubbed LMD (Bachelor, Masters and PhD), stressing the increasing partnership between the university and the country's economic environment, which aims at promoting the employability of university graduates.
The book's final chapter entitled "Tunisia's perspectives", highlights the objectives set for the next period, including training perspectives, investments and the creation of enterprises in the context of a global economy, whence the importance of the learning of languages which plays an important role in the reform of the university.
